Instead, Klaveness and other representatives from football nations in Europe plan to visit the World Cup host country at the end of June. This is because the Qatari authorities do not have the opportunity to meet them on May 17 as planned.
– We met last night in the Uefa group and were told that the Qatari authorities and the committee can not meet us until June. And then the assessment was whether one should still travel now to meet workers and NGOs (non-governmental organizations). We agreed to have a digital meeting with the NGOs next week, and that we would rather go in June, because it is a big point to meet the authorities, Klaveness says to Fotball.TV in connection with the Uefa congress in Vienna.
– There was a fairly significant majority to travel. I’m glad we’re postponing it until we can meet the authorities. We must put pressure on them, and it should happen on this side of the summer, the Norwegian football president continues.
Klaveness has received a lot of attention and great support in Europe for directing criticism at Fifa and the World Cup organizer in Qatar during the Fifa congress in March. Among other things, it first led to a collaboration with the German Football Association on the financing of a center for migrant workers in Qatar.
World Cup chief Hassan Al-Thawadi was not happy at Klaveness during the Fifa congress and thought she should have contacted him before giving her speech. In June, they will probably get a chance to talk together.
